Sayonara Jupiter looks promising, but apparently one just has to see The Room.
I would think The Room would not be Smithee eligible, being a Cult Classic. Not that that means it wouldn't be fun to watch, but I'm voting for a Smithee-eligible movie.
How long does it take something to become a Cult Classic, anyway?

...and does it count if I've had it for ... um ... a while?

Actually, I think we should watch it solely so people will stop asking if we've seen it.
I think it's less a matter of time than it is of mainstream popularity. It's however long it takes it to come to the attention of the masses.

I cannot, however, argue with your last point.
